Upholstery and Mattress

Parts of our home are often overlooked when we clean. Our furniture and mattresses don’t appear to be dirty like other surfaces of our home, yet they are often the ones in most need of cleaning. At Pro Steamer Cleaning and Restoration, we’ve made it our goal to educate families in the Roswell, New Mexico area on the importance of clean upholstery and mattresses. Even if you clean the rest of your home, your house isn’t as healthy and fresh as it could be if you don’t take the time to have your furniture and mattresses professionally cleaned.

Why Clean Furniture?

Over time, your furniture collects dust, dirt particles, and other allergens that can cause health concerns for your family. Dust is the number-one enemy of upholstered furniture. Although dust can’t be seen as easily on upholstery as other surfaces, it’s there all the same.

Dust weaves its way into the fabric of your furniture and causes damage to the fibers. When you sit on or otherwise use your furniture, you’re compressing the particles further into the upholstery. The longer the dust sits there, the less likely it can be removed with vacuuming and other regular cleaning methods.

The Clean Furniture Test

Not sure if your upholstery or mattress needs a cleaning? Try out these four tests to see just how much dirt, dust, and other allergens get trapped in your home.

Sometimes surface dust isn’t always visible on upholstery the same way it is on something like a wooden bookshelf. To detect if your furniture has surface dust, place a bright light over the surface so you can clearly see the space around it. Then, use a stick (a paint mixer or wooden spoon will do the trick) and whack the surface two to three times. You’ll be able to see the dust particles in the light and determine whether or not your furniture needs a cleaning.

Even if you don’t see visible dust on the surface, your upholstery could still be hiding particles that are embedded in the fibers. To test for these, take your vacuum cleaner’s attachment nozzle and tie a thin piece of black cloth to the end with a rubber band. Then, attach your vacuum’s upholstery tool over it. Run the vacuum over the surface of your upholstery and look at the black cloth. Embedded dust will stick to the cloth, clearly visible, indicating that your furniture could use a cleaning.

Protein soils are what’s left behind by organic materials, such as food and drink. When you spill something on your furniture, a simple spot cleaning may not get all of the soil up. To test whether your furniture is still holding on to protein soils, spray a small amount of Windex on a white terry cloth towel. Then, scrub the towel across the surface of your upholstery. If you notice soil on the towel afterward, you’ve got soil on your upholstery that needs to be cleaned.

Scent is often our most valuable sense when it comes to detecting an unclean surface. Soil accumulations foster bacterial growth that feeds on the contaminants and creatures living in the fibers of your furniture. To detect a malodor, stand or kneel with your nose about three inches above the surface of your furniture and waft the air toward your nose with a fanning motion. If your furniture needs a cleaning, you’ll be able to smell a strange odor coming off your upholstery.

Upholstery and Mattress Cleaning F.A.Q.

Today’s fabrics are designed to hide dirt with unique patterns and colors to help furniture look clean and fresh longer than it actually is. But just because the dirt doesn’t show doesn’t mean it’s not there.

This will depend on how much use your furniture gets. If you live in your home for less than six months out of the year (such as a vacation home), you’ll probably only need a cleaning every two to three years. If you live in your home year-round but don’t have any kids or pets, you’ll probably only need a cleaning once a year. However, the more people and animals that live in your house, the more you’ll need to clean it, possibly two or three times a year.

Most furniture cleaning is done by the linear foot, but factors such as soil conditions and the difficulty of the piece affect the price. For example, we charge $108 (approx.) to clean and protect (Scotchgard) a 6’ sofa ($22/linear ft). Sofas, loveseats, and sectionals are approx. $18/linear ft. Dining room chairs are approx. $8-$10 a seat. Recliners are $65. Overstuffed chairs/occasional chairs are $45-55. Leather cleaning is 1.5x the upholstery price.

Although it’s not a requirement, you definitely gain benefits by having our technicians apply protectants whenever we clean your rugs, carpets, and furniture. This protectant makes it more difficult for spills, spots, and stains to get to the interior of upholstery fibers. It keeps the mess on the surface, making it easier to clean.
