Does Your Furniture Need Professional Cleaning?

Test #1--Surface Dust (the slap test) Place a bright light over the top of one of your sofa cushions and, using a stick, (like a paint mixing stick or wooden spoon) whack the cushion 2-3 times. Observe the amount of dust released into the air. If you see dust your furniture needs cleaned.
Test #2--Embedded Particulate (the black cloth test) Use your vacuum cleaner attachment nozzle and take a piece of thin black cloth and rubber band it to the end of the vacuum hose, letting it drape into the hose a little way. Put the upholstery tool on the end of the hose. Now turn on the vacuum and run it across the top of the cushion. Take off the upholstery tool and look at your cloth. If you see fine particles, your furniture needs cleaned.

Test #3--Protein Soils (the white towel test) Take a small amount of Windex and spray it on a white terry cloth towel. Scrub it across one of your seat cushions or arm covers. Look at the towel. Any questions?
Test #4--Malodors (the sniff test) Completely exhale. Place your nose 3” above the seat cushions and waft the air toward your nose with a fanning motion. Do you notice any odors? Soil accumulations foster bacterial growth that feed on the contaminants and creatures living in the fibers of your furniture. If your furniture smells funny it’s an indication that it should be cleaned as soon as possible.

Still Not Convinced?
Think of how much dust would accumulate on a table
if it were never dusted.
That same amount is on your sofa, too.
You just can't see it!

How does furniture get dirty and why doesn't it seem to show? Dust is the #1 enemy of upholstered furniture. Gritty matter blows in through open doors and windows and impregnates itself on your furniture cushions and backs. Then, when you sit on the cushion, the oils from your skin compress the dirt into the fabric until it’s almost impossible to remove by vacuuming. The abrasive action of the grit compressing into the fiber cuts the fibers like a knife--that’s why your furniture wears out. Then, combine this with pollen, food crumbs, dust mites and their nasty fecal pellets…your furniture is literally awash with soil in the short span of just a year (with the average family). If you have pets and kids your furniture needs to be cleaned thoroughly at least once a year.

Why doesn’t dirt show? Because today’s fabrics are designed to hide dirt with patterns and colors but just because it doesn’t show doesn’t mean that it’s not there.

How often should I have my furniture cleaned?
If you’re a retired couple and live in your home at least 6 months a year, probably every two or three years. If you have an active family with 3-5 kids and pets, I suggest at least twice a year.

Why professional cleaning? Because professional cleaning involves special cleaning agents that sanitize and remove soil from your fabric furniture with 230 degree hot water and professional cleaning products and tools. Many fabrics are delicate. If you try spot cleaning furniture you can ruin it by not getting it evenly wet. We have seen many instances of damage done to furniture by clients who’ve tried to clean it themselves.

How much does it cost? Most furniture cleaning is done by the linear foot, but factors such as soil conditions and the difficulty of the piece affect the price. We, for example, charge $108 (approx.) to clean and protect (Scotchgard) an 6’ sofa. ($22/linear ft) Sofas, loveseats, and sectionals are approx. $18/linear ft. Dining room chairs are approx. $8-$10 a seat.  Recliners are $65. Overstuffed Chairs/Occasional Chairs are $45-55. Leather cleaning is 1 1/2 x the upholstery price.

Is protectant necessary? You definitely benefit by having us apply our protectant any time we clean your carpets, rugs, and furniture. Our protectant makes it more difficult for spills, spots, and stains to penetrate to the interior of the fibers, where they cause permanent color change. The protectant keeps messes on the surface where they can be easily cleaned. Some fabrics have protectant that’s applied during the manufacturing process. The protectants degrade over time with use and cleaning and must be “refreshed” from time to time.
